January 2008:
Fireworks over San Francisco Bay

We started the New Year on Angel Island. We paddled over there on New Years Eve, set up camp, cooked dinner, went on a hike to the top of Mt. Livermore (the highest peak on the island) and then watched the fireworks over San Francisco. They skies were clear and the fireworks impressive, but nothing compared to the “natural fireworks” a few hours earlier at sunset!
Rob's Hut

We also spent a few days in the mountains on Rob’s Hut. Thanks to a few storms earlier that week, we had plenty of new snow, and skiing/snowshoeing to and around the hut was very fun. Cross-country skiing is still one of my favorite outdoor activities! Breaking trail, pulling a sled, gliding down some moderate slopes, and feeling really good at the end of the day reminded me very much of all that skiing back in Alaska.
Akhiok

My work was busy and productive over the year, and allowed me to visit some interesting and beautiful places: I spent some time at Lassen volcano, were we installed a GPS network to monitor volcanic activiy. In June, I went to Alaska and helped with maintenance work on Kodiak island. I had not been to Kodiak before, so this was really exciting. My colleagues and I visited some of the small villages where we had GPS stations (like Akhiok, which is shown on the picture), ate good fish, and saw quite a bit of wildlife.
Wine tasting

This fall, Dave and I finally went on a wine tasting tour. We live in the middle of the wine country, but had never done any tasting. We picked a beautiful fall day, and together with our friends John and Ruth, rode our bikes through the Dry Creek Valley, stopping at a handful wineries on the way.
Newberry obsidian flow

In the spring, we went on a road trip and explored volcano country in Northeastern California and Oregon. After checking out Glass Mountain and exploring some of the caves at Lava Beds National Monument, we went to Crater Lake, and Newberry Volcanic Monument. It is always impressive to see the massive obsidian flows. We went back to Oregon again in July to celebrate Chris and Dave’s wedding in Philomath. Crater Lake
Queen Mary

Seakayaking occupied quite a few of our weekends last year as well. Among the many trips and events, we welcomed the Queen Mary into San Francisco Bay, I organized a geology paddle along the Marin Headlands, attended the Traditional Arctic Kayak Symposium in San Simeon and expanded our repertoire of Greenland rolling tricks!
